White supremacy –and indeed all manifestations of racism and every other sin that plagues the human race– thrives where the true Gospel has been forgotten, where man has set himself up as a god, each doing what is right in his own eyes and measuring the world against himself: judging his neighbor against the color of his own skin. The antidote is the Lamb that takes away the sins of the world: the unblemished Christ by whose standard all, black white and middle eastern, are wretches alike.

@viciousviscosity @lattera Have you seen the code that runs on cars these days? Systemd would be a welcome improvement over what most car manufacturers have come up with on their own. More stable, more secure, and more easily debugged.

You know a programmer is frustrated when their commit messages stoop to this. “How's the bug hunting, catch anything today?” “No.”

RT @jsavalle Regarding the popularity of :
I believe hosting companies are playing here a vital role

WordPress has grew to be a large part of the internet - greatly facilitated by one-click-installs provided by hosting company.

I think in today day and age where so much tools are available we should see more hosting company dedicated to provide one-click instal for but also rocketchat, nextcloud, etc

@dajbelshaw@social.coop As someone who bought a account as part of the mass exodus when first sold and I didn't like the new management, I find this quite amusing. How many years later, I'm still a happy Pinboard customer and now that the crazy pants notion that all startups with funny domains are automatically worth billions has somewhat blown over, the guy with an actual business model buys the withered skeleton of his one hot competition.

@potpro Don't do stuff like that. Besides wasting a bunch of people's time cleaning up after you, you're going to get yourself blocked from major instances.

@mastodonusercount And thus it begins. Troll instances enter stage left.

This cartoon reminds me of an experiment I once read about (not sure if a literary device or actual events), about a teacher who proved the failure of socialism to his students who thought it was the best idea ever.

The students argued that socialism was the future, so he told them that their exam marks would be evenly shared.

Exam 1: Most slacked, few worked hard, decent average.
Exam 2: The hard workers didn't bother, since they wouldn't be rewarded. Everyone failed.

@robokel Both of these ideas require reliable and performant open source language detection, which isn't an easy nut to crack. See for example this discussion: mastodon.social/@Gargron/31341. The issue tracker for both Mastodon and most client apps have assorted requests for one or both of these, but there isn't a clear road to implement them yet.

@gsora @arjaybe Sorry if the last couple messages came across as rude, I was only trying to give pragmatic explanations, no sarcasm indented.

avatar

Caleb Maclennan alerque@mastodon.social

@arjaybe @gsora An APK file is the package all Android Apps come in. You download it and install it on your phone.

avatar

Caleb Maclennan alerque@mastodon.social

@arjaybe @gsora If downloading an APK is too much of a workaround for you then use a different Mastodon instance until Android gets it's act together or the dev of the instance you want to use decides to support a broader range of device capabilities.

avatar

Caleb Maclennan alerque@mastodon.social

@arjaybe @gsora The problem isn't being on old versions in general because the Android build system packages new libraries in builds for older phones, it is specific versions that were supposed to have something they didn't. If you're willing to sacrifice your own security (you already are being on an un-patched Android!) there are devs out there with workarounds. For example Musky wraps network connections using repackaged libraries: github.com/carlosjs23/Masty/re

avatar

Caleb Maclennan alerque@mastodon.social

@arjaybe @gsora That's not a Tusky issue and no, another client will not fix it. Unless they roll their own SSL handling (which would be a horrible idea) this is a bug in the SSL library version in Android 7.0. See github.com/Vavassor/Tusky/issu for details. You can upgrade your Android to 7.1 which fixes this or use a slightly less secure Mastodon instance. The mastodon.cloud dev only allows select cyphers: mastodon.cloud/users/TheAdmin/.

avatar

Caleb Maclennan alerque@mastodon.social

@munin Ouch. Obviously that dev was getting beaten up in comments because he put his foot in his mouth, but handling it by locking the issue was not in very good taste. And it really is scary that my system root is in the hands of a dev that doesn't know their way around basic Unix user space tools.

avatar

Caleb Maclennan alerque@mastodon.social

@gsora I have certainly worked through understanding problems from scratch myself. And for the record I'm also not against competition in the OSS world as it keeps projects sharp. But at the same time diluting the contribution pool and starting over when no client is fully developed yet seems kind of counter productive. If existing projects had stagnated or a fresh approach was needed that would make more sense, but now we're duplicating raw effort toward the same end and not even competing.

avatar

Caleb Maclennan alerque@mastodon.social

@gsora Why start a new project instead of contributing to ? Most of what's being requested here is either already done or on the roadmap and open to contributions. Is there some fundamentally different approach to the client thata takes that's incompatable with how Tusky is shaping up?

@gled Why do you have TWO follow bots on the same instance with roughly the same description going around following people?

avatar

Caleb Maclennan alerque@mastodon.social

I just went around and did some basic nmap-ing on the most popular Mastodon instances, and there's some seriously sketchy stuff in there. Publicly reachable Postgres servers, tons of open internal HTTP ports, SSH with password login, multiple Mastodon instances that seem to be running on mail server VMs, …

I guess if you're just running a single-user instance for yourself, sure, but those are all 2000+ user instances.
