@Anathema Can’t tell if you’re being serious. But if you’re not finding anything enjoyable, that may be a sign of depression, and there are medications that can help with that.

In Washington, they have these signs that say β€œabrupt lane change”.

I thought that meant that the lanes were being repainted and I would need to change lanes quickly.

What it *actually* seems to mean is that one lane has been re-paved and the other has not, so there’s a mini cliff between them.

I … would not have guessed that from the text.

@Gargron Talar þú Íslensku?

As a native English speaker, "nΓ‘mskeiΓ°(iΓ°)" is easy to *pronounce*, but Americans just won't know how to read it. :p

nΓ‘ = "now"
skeiΓ° = rhymes with "lathe"
iΓ° = Hmm, yeah, hard to find an English equivalent there. "if" with a lisp? :p

Does anyone else cringe at the word "fam"? Like "bro" (which I also dislike) its use often seems to force an unearned familiarity.

It reminds me of calling a stranger "friend", as in "Hey, friend."

Why do people think that just because the software you make available is FOSS you have to be friendly to everyone who uses it?

Customer support and positive feelings from the maintainer are not part of the license deal

"{Haskell, JS, whatever} as fast as C!" always comes down to poking the VM/compiler in just the right ways, by writing non-obvious code, that won't trigger the desired optimisations on a different implementation/version, after a refactoring that invalidates some assumptions, or what have you. I'd rather write obvious code that someone else can understand without having to be a compiler/VM expert.

The web browser Brave is marketed as a privacy-friendly ad-free alternative, but that's pretty disingenuous.

Brave exists not to protect privacy, but to make money from selling ads.

Brave is a commercial company funded by venture capital. Its business model is selling advertising and cryptocurrency investment.

One of Brave's owners is Peter Thiel's Founders Fund. Thiel is also the head of Palantir (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palantir) and on the board of Facebook.

I do not recommend using Brave.

@alva if the web site makes lots/mostly ad revenue, then developers (or those signing their paychecks) may think that that’s a feature, not a bug. 😞

I'm tired of having to pay money to corporations who then use some of their profits to lobby against my interests. A few that come to mind:

1. ISPs
2. Health insurance
3. Tax preparation
4. Pharmaceutical companies

I'm sure there are more. The brokenness is everywhere.

Oh my goodness I've just learned a thing about The Matrix that causes it to make a lot more sense: In the original script the humans were used as neural network compute clusters by the Machines and as a crucial component of The Matrix itself.

Which is why humans who were aware of the simulation could control aspects of The Matrix - their minds were part of its foundation.

Unfortunately the test audiences had trouble understanding this concept so the studio changed the human role to "batteries".

Had a dream that I was on a magic tour bus traveling who-knows-where, but everyone got to meet their spirit animals. Mine was the personification of a small energetic dog. β€œOh, is that why my mind can’t stop racing?” Then I cried. Then I woke up. Weird.

Last night I fell asleep before dinner.

Husband tried to wake me up to have dinner. But I was so happy to be able to sleep without waking myself up coughing, I just moved from the couch to the bed.

After ~11 hours of sleep, I feel like a normal person. ish?

It's so easy to take being healthy for granted.

@isagalaev @tsturm IMO types reduce bugs by reducing the problem space. But to get that you need a language that will actually check and enforce those types. Not having random NPEs in modern null-safe languages is lovely, for example.

@npd @Gargron Oops, I meant "verify my Mastodon identity like it can the others."

avatar

Cody Casterline πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ NfNitLoop@mastodon.social

@npd @Gargron Exactly.

And for an idea of how hacky it is without proper integration, here's how I previously "verified" my Mastodon ID:
keybase.pub/nfnitloop/proofs.m

The proof is all manual, though, so `keybase id nfnitloop` can't automatically verify my keybase identity like it can the others.

avatar

Cody Casterline πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ NfNitLoop@mastodon.social

@Gargron I'm not a Keybase expert, but I'm a fan. I'm keybase.io/nfnitloop if you want to chat about it. Or, pop into the `keybasefriends` team on Keybase to find lots of folks (and some employees) to help talk through stuff. :)

avatar

Cody Casterline πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ NfNitLoop@mastodon.social

@Gargron re: "without any cryptography":

Keybase is doing the "right thing" by designing their service so that users don't have to trust keybase servers at all -- they can verify cryptographically from another user's key(s) that a public "proof" was provided by that user.

They *could* do rel=me links, but that would mean that user('s client)s would have to trust that that link from keybase.io hadn't been tampered with.

(I'm not up to speed on the rest of their "proof integration" stuff, tho.)
